‘Gruesome Playground Injuries’ will bring a roller-coaster of emotions

Audiences will have a unique experience before them as Art House Productions collaborates with Half-Light Productions in an upcoming presentation of Rajiv Joseph’s dark dramedy, “Gruesome Playground Injuries,” directed by Catriona Rubenis-Stevens.

The fast-paced and intense “Gruesome Playground Injuries” tells the story of Kayleen and Doug, two friends whose lives are intertwined through a series of injuries that bring them together.

“You have two different characters dealing with different types of injuries,” said Rubenis-Stevens of Half-Light Productions. “For one of them, their scars are internal, and for the other it’s external.”

Spanning ages 8 to 38, the play follows the relationship between the two characters as they navigate life’s challenges, sometimes leaning on each other too much, occasionally causing harm and often struggling to ask for help.

Kayleen is played by Ashley Renée Scott, who is also serving as producer for the production. Doug is portrayed by Mario C. Brown.

The play’s non-chronological structure allows the audience to piece together the attraction of the two characters while exploring themes of lost love, pain, regret and how injuries can map a lifetime.
