Solo exhibit gets JC Pride rolling with ‘Crushed’ photos
Before moving to Jersey City in 2002, Beth Achenbach found her passion for photography while working in a camera store in the 1990s. After gaining enough experience and developing her technique, she made the move to JC and became the official photographer for the annual Jersey City Pride celebration.
As JC Pride gets underway this month, Art House and Achenbach are partnering with the citywide celebration taking place with a new solo exhibit, “Crushed,” that will run from Saturday, Aug 3, through Sunday, Aug 25.
An opening reception will take place on Aug 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. as an official Jersey City Pride event.
By salvaging discarded aluminum cans and plastic bottles that bear the scars of neglect and abuse, Achenbach’s photography uses these everyday objects to confront the hidden trauma that is buried deep within us.
With neglect and abuse as emblems of human suffering, Achenbach’s photographs capture these everyday discarded objects as silent witnesses of unexpressed pain, abandonment and heartbreak meant to challenge the societal norms of suppression.
